At the World Economic

At the World Economic Forum 2010, Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers chats with the always great interviewer Maria Bartiromo of CNBC. This is John’s 11th straight attendance at WEF and he compares this year’s WEF to last year’s and talks about the “mood” of fellow WEF attendees. CNBC writes: “Most of the global economies have stabilized,” John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, said. “Here in Davos, the mood is much more positive than a year ago, especially for the technology companies. And that’s natural because when economies start to recover, you apply first technology – get your productivity up – then you add jobs.”

Continuing with our

Continuing with our 25th anniversary celebration this year, we’re highlighting Joel Bion, SVP of Research & Advanced Development. Joel has been with Cisco a little over 20 years and his best memory is the family-like atmosphere of Cisco. He emhasizes Cisco’s “figure-it-out” attitude, no matter what the issue is. This attitude, he says, has been carried over from the earliest days of Cisco to make it the successful company it is today. Joel also discusses Cisco’s IOS software that was developed at the inception of the company and has continued to evolve, grow and meet the needs of our customer base. In 25 years Bion says he wants: “people think of the network as always-on…and we’re always connected to it…and they no longer notice the devices they are using…and the network is essential to their lives and essential to how they communicate.” Generalna | Komentari (20) | Trekbekovi (0)

Afraid I am dating

Afraid I am dating myself, but I remember sitting in an art history 101 class, listening to the teacher in front of the room lecture about 19th century artists while I furiously took hand written notes. Eventually I ventured to the campus library to research Rodin’s “The Thinker” sculpture on microfiche and again took copious hand written notes for fear I would run out of quarters needed to feed the photocopier. Now, almost two decades later (I say with a bit of a wince), university students carry notebook PCs from class to class across a wireless enabled campus. Many students don’t even go to a physical classroom at all, but catch up on coursework they might have missed via video on the campus Intranet. Imagine being able to attend a class from virtually anywhere in the world and still feel part of the campus community. Duke University’s new lecture facility provides Fuqua School of Business students with access to professors, business leaders and guest lecturers located around the globe, extending the in-person classroom environment across campuses and into the business world. Thankfully, today’s classroom has come a long way.

This week media and analysts were invited to a roundtable to hear how the Curtin University of Technology (Perth, Australia) is building their cloud. Along with special guests from the systems integrator (Alphawest), telecom provider (Optus Business) and vendor partners (Cisco, EMC and VMware), the Curtin University of Technology’s CIO, Peter Nikoletatos, discussed the journey toward cloud. The Curtin University of Technology has facilities in a diverse range of locations across Asia, and more than 43,000 students and 3,200 staff and is recognised as one of the most virtualised enterprises in Australia. Already at the forefront of cloud computing adoption, Curtin is now also one of the first beta customers to sign up to Optus’ new private cloud-based service which utilises technology from Cisco, EMC and VMware and is also currently deploying an internal private cloud, based on the Cisco Unified Computing System. The common Cisco Unified Computing architecture across the University’s internal private cloud and the beta Optus Business hosted cloud service will allow the University to increase IT staff productivity and business agility through rapid delivery of services, for example, to research departments in hours not weeks.
